Literature Review (30%)
Topic
This assignment will allow students to select a topic of their choice and analyse it, while using a
theoretical Public Relations (PR) framework. The PR theory, concept, or model should be selected
from a list of PR theoretical frameworks stated bellow, which were presented in-class (weeks 1-5):
PR’s Roles and Responsibilities
Origins and Evolution of PR
Theoretical foundations
Ethics and Responsibility
PR and Law
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to edify students how to use academic literature to expand their
knowledge about Public Relations as a discipline, conduct desk research by using secondary sources -
search academic databases to find relevant literature, analyse different viewpoints and philosophical
approaches, use academic literature to create supporting arguments and synthesise knowledge, and
to develop academic writing skills. To achieve this a student will have to select one of the PR theories,
concepts or models (listed above) and analyse it in an essay style. An essay should start by providing
a general overview of the topic, followed up by a drill-down analysis either through: history (a),
concept’s development phases (b) or utilisation in the contemporary PR practice (c). For example, if
choosing the first topic: PR’s Roles and Responsibilities, a student may select one of the following
areas to explore in a literature review style:
- PR role and function within organisations;
- Diverse roles of PR professionals: a staff member, an agency employee, or an independent
practitioner;
- Managerial and communication function of PR;
- PR specialisation for: Not-for-profit (NFP) organisations, educational institutions, fundraising
or donor relations, research (trends, public opinion, issues management), international PR
expert for MNE, investor relations and financial PR, industry, government, and health care
sectors; PR’s function in business and society.
