Assessment 1 – Journal Article Evaluation (500 words, due Saturday Week 4, 6 May at
5pm)
This assignment is a writing task that asks you to summarise and evaluate a prescribed academic
journal article in 500 words. Your prescribed journal article is identified under ‘Essential Text and
Materials’ below.
Writing a journal article evaluation requires you to read a text in detail, and to also read other
related texts, so that you can present an informed and reasonable critique. You will present the
strengths and weaknesses of the prescribed text in your assignment. This will require an
understanding not just the content of the text, but also an understanding of a text’s purpose, the
intended audience and why it is structured the way it is.
The following structure is to be used for your Journal Article Evaluation:
Assignment cover page
Introduction (approximately 50 words):
Introduce the reader to your Journal Article Evaluation by stating the purpose of the task.
Announce the author(s) of the text and the title and briefly state the topic. Conclude the
introduction with a statement of your evaluation of the text. This can be a positive or
negative evaluation or, as is usually the case, a mixed response.
Summary of Prescribed Text (approximately 100 words):
Present a summary of the key points in the text along with a limited number of examples.
Briefly explain the author’s purpose/intentions throughout the text, their key findings, and
how the text is organised.
