Discuss desirable male versus female gender attributes as incarnated by Japanese

film stars, with reference to academic sources and specific film sequences.

Choose ONE of the following topics

a) The guy-next-door appeal: Discuss what sets of meanings associated with Ricardo

Darín’s unique transnational image of the “accessible” star are evoked in The Secret

in Their Eyes, including a reflection on critics’ reception and awards received.

b) b) Latina Star: Discuss Salma Hayek’s trajectory to stardom in relation to Latin stars’

images in Hollywood and notions of Latinidad, exoticism and sexualisation of the

representation of his “Spanishness” in connection to notions of transnationality,

masculinity and cultural difference.

Topics Essay 2

Length: 2500 words – due date: 10 November 2017

Submit your essay on Turnitin and hand in a hard copy at the School of Languages and

Cultures office. Choose ONE of the following topics from either the French or German

Module

1) On French module

First: Choose 2 film stars from France or any French-speaking country (ie: Canada,

Switzerland, Belgium) other than the stars discussed during lectures and tutorials. They

could be from different generations, community groups, male or female, or represent

different genres.

Task: Compare and contrast the identities and careers of the 2 film stars with specific

focus on their socio-political and cultural contexts. Consider themes such as on-screen

and off-screen persona, conflation of star’s real life and characters, gender, social class

and racial stereotyping, and representation of national identity or specific community.

2) On German Module

a) “Sibel Kekilli: another whore and another Madonna?” Explore in your critical

analysis with reference to Head on/Gegen die Wand and When we leave/Die

Fremde, as well as Kekilli’s public perception, the following aspects:

• the double bind for Muslim women in Western mainstream

cinema

• gender roles for women and the sexualisation of their bodies

• typecasting

• the agency of female characters

b) “The ethnic minority star’s image”: Pick one of the lead actors in EITHER Head

on/Gegen die Wand (Fatih Akin) OR When we leave/Die Fremde (Sibel Kekilli)

OR Almanya-Willkommen in Deutschland/Almanya-Welcome to Germany

(Vedat Erincin). Discuss the stardom of the actor or actress in relation to their

perceived identity as member of an ethnic minority community. Consider the

following aspects:

• the typecasting of ethnic minority stars, also with reference to

other national cinemas (e.g. Japanese, French)

• catering to stereotypes (race, religion, face and body type)

• stars as powerless or powerful elites in the nation

• the star’s duty to represent their community
