REVIEW AN ANIMATION (20%)
Close your eyes, and imagine that you are the animation reviewer for an
international media arts magazine! It is your job to write a piece that thoroughly
explores an animation in a catchy, concise and accurate piece of writing.
o The task is to review one of the animations we have seen in class during week 2, 3 or 4.
(Check viewing list 2, 3 and 4 on the Moodle)
o You must explore and discuss themes, ideas and meanings (as discussed in week 2)
o You must explore and discuss aesthetics (visuals, sound, pace, light etc, as discussed in
week 3)
o You must explore and discuss any appropriation OR metaphor OR irony the work
has (as discussed in Week 4)
o You must argue your ideas and review the positives and negatives about the animation.
o You must make it known what your personal feelings and ideas are about the
animation, give evidence, reasons and back up your opinion in the form of research.
(see below for research details)
o You can also explore plot, style, characters and the over all effect of the
animation on the viewer.
RESEARCH
o You must research for this review. You need to get your facts right. You will need to find
at least 2 articles about the animation you select.
o NO Wikipedia at all. (But check foot notes. This is where Wikipedia is useful)
o You can use online reviews and articles, articles found on the Moodle, journals,
newspaper articles and books.
o At least one of them must be “peer reviewed” (an academic journal, or published
book.) The other can be a source that is useful, intelligent but not necessarily peer
reviewed.
o You must quote something from these articles in your essay.
USE THE QUESTION SHEETS TO DEVELOP YOUR IDEAS
o Refer to the questions sheets given out in week 2, 3 and 4. By answering all the
questions on the sheets, you should be able to generate most of your argument and
see that you actually have a good deal of information about the animation.
SPECIFICATIONS
o 600-700 words
o Coversheet
o Essay: typed in Arial, 12 point.
o Reference list
o Printouts of your 2 research articles
o Essay plan
o REFERENCES. The library databases are your main resource. The library also has a good
selection of books on animation. Google Scholar is a good. Sage Journals: Animation An
interdisciplinary journal. The international animation journal. You can also access the
articles for this subject on the Moodle. You will needed to be logged into your Google
drive account for Deakin Colllege
DUE WEEK 6.
o NO TIME IN CLASS ON THIS DAY. IT MUST BE READY FOR HAND IN AT THE BEGINNING
OF THE CLASS. HARD COPY, AND PDF UPLOADED TO THE MOODLE.
THE FINE PRINT:
Please note: Please refer to the unit guide for lateness penalties.
Please note that if are sick on the day that an assignment is due, even with a doctors certificate, it is expected that
you email a copy on that day or have a friend email it or come and hand in on your behalf. Not handing in work on
the due date because of sickness on the hand in date, does not entitle you to more time for the assignment. You
will still have to hand in the hard copy on your return. The email is evidence that you have completed the work on
time. Unless specified, all work must be handed in, in hard copy.
No emailed work will be marked unless requested under special circumstances.
HAND IN HARDCOPY AND UPLOAD ALL OF IT TO THE MOODLE AS ONE PDF.
UPLOAD A COPY OF YOUR ESSAY ON TURNITIN. THE LINK IS ON THE MOODLE.
