ARCH1080: ENABLING SKILLS & RESEARCH PRACTICE
PROJECT THREE: ANALYSIS
The aim of this project is to extend your critical understanding of a single building and to develop your skills in
architectural analysis. It requires you to identify a number of key architectural strategies employed in your case
study and to communicate these strategies using SketchUp.
ANALYSIS: THEMATIC
Select two topics from the list below. Your selection should be informed by the critical literature on your case
study. Focus on those aspects of the building that have been described as critically significant or novel. Analyse
your case study relative to each of the two selected topics. In each case identify the key architectural strategies.
Relationship of Building to Topography
Relationship of Building to Urban Context
Circulation
Arrangement of Plan
Arrangement of Section
Relationship between Structure and Envelope
Order of Assembly

COMMUNICATION
Communicate your findings using two SketchUp animations. On the opening/title page for each animation include
a title. This title should identify the topic of your analysis. You are no longer required to describe the building as a
“whole” – instead your animation must focus on the topic of your analysis. In each animation employ one (or
more) of the following techniques:
Annotation: note(s) by way of explanation added to the SketchUp animation.
Diagrams: graphic(s) by way of explanation added to the SketchUp animation.
Sequencing: eg: assemble the building in sequence; take the building apart in sequence.
Translation: eg: transform one plan into another.
You are not required to but may use other software to render your SketchUp model.
SUBMISSION: Week 13 tutorial: Monday May 30. Submit digital files by no later than midnight.
Requirements:
The animations must be submitted to the folder for this course found at:
\\coursefolders.fbe.unsw.edu.au\DATA\Courses\ARCH1080 (if accessing from the UNSW network).
The file must contain 2 saved animated scenes.
Plagiarism Declaration: Include a scanned copy of a signed Plagiarism Declaration, the text of which can be
downloaded from the BE website within the student intranet.
Present your project during Week 13 tutorial. No prescribed format. Duration: three minutes.
Criteria:
The assignment will be marked according to:
Evidence of research
Depth of analysis
Structure and clarity of analysis
Effective use of animation
