This coursebook has been developed over a period of years by staff
at the University of New South Wales.  The materials have been
extensively trialed and adapted over this period, using input and
feedback from staff and students in the course at Kensington,
    UNSW and in offshore programs.

The coursebook is influenced by a particular approach to linguistics,
that of Systemic Functional Grammar, which views language as it
occurs in its relevant context, and considers how the text is realised
through particular grammatical features.  The writing component of
the program uses a ‘genre-based’ approach, in which texts are
structured in a particular way according to their purpose.

In preparing this course, an attempt has been made to integrate the
four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in various
combinations, and to develop the skill of critical thinking as a sub-
    text of the overall course.

Teachers in offshore programs may wish to spend varying amounts
of time covering the particular skill areas according to the needs and
proficiency levels of their students.  The skills are practised and
recycled over the various lessons, with later units building on and
reinforcing the skills introduced in earlier units.  It is therefore
essential that all units are covered in the teaching program.

The coursebook itself is presented in two versions, with a Teacher
book and a Student book.  The Teacher’s book differs from the
Student’s book because it contains instructions for the teachers and
answer keys for exercises.  The Teacher’s book is also
accompanied by a CD of Powerpoint slides to accompany each unit.

The UNSW Foundation Year (UFY) Academic English program is
an integrated skills course which complements the broader areas
included within the subject components of the Foundation Year
    Certificate.

Weekly units are oriented around a series of themes which consider
academic texts in context, incorporating tasks which require
learners to understand, analyse and produce spoken and written
texts appropriate to the context of Academic English.  The course
takes a communicative approach, where learners are given tasks
which practise the four macro skills in an integrated manner
appropriate to the current and future academic environment.
