    Learning outcomes:

    Assignment remit:

KK University has decided to develop an overseas business project in Asia. Although understood as ‘not-for-profit’ under its charitable status, the College nevertheless aims to run a new venture that will make a financial surplus. Broadly described as a ‘hospitality enterprise’, KK University International Solutions (The role you are) will be designed around the concept of a bespoke convention centre that will market itself via three key facets:

    ·         Accommodation and restaurant facilities for up to 200 clients
    ·         Meetings and events packages
    ·         Education and consultancy services for corporate strategy, contemporary marketing and business start-ups

The College plans to acquire suitable premises in a strategic location and staff the operation with a local workforce but with some managerial presence from the UK. It can be assumed that KK University is able to fund the start-up costs and first year’s running costs for International Solutions but thereafter will be dependent on commercial gains and possibly a business loan if necessary. KK University will in time offer placement opportunities for local students.

    Your task

Referring to this given business case and utilising your knowledge from your programme of study (Marketing Management; Business Enterprise; International Hospitality and Tourism Management) you are required to identify likely key issues facing KK University International Solutions and write a 4000-word critique of the relevant academic literature. This will be written in the conventional format of a ‘literature review’, which will be explained to you on Day Two of the teaching block. The critique should be concluded with a summary of the key issues (recommended: 3 to 4) – these issues will be taken forward to the Practical Examination (research poster) as the basis for your theoretical framework (explained on Day Two). Examples of literature reviews will be posted on the Research Design 560 website to give you an indication of style and format.
    Here is a suggested approach:

Suppose your strengths lie in the field of hospitality management. You would consider the likely issues facing a UK-based operation expanding its business overseas, specifically Asia. You would begin reading widely around the subject of hospitality operations in the Asian market; the likely challenges; existing research. Following your exploratory reading (peer-reviewed articles in the main) you narrow-down your critique/review to four principal themes, which you have effectively identified as key issues:

    1.      Cross-cultural management studies
    2.      Yield management
    3.      Hospitality consumer psychology
    4.      Service quality

These four issues then become your theoretical framework for your research poster and are very likely to influence the construction of the poster’s aim and objectives and ultimately data collection and analysis. Likewise, a student who specialises in marketing management or business enterprise will be able to think through the given business case and relate to a number of likely key issues.
