To engage students in sharing the ideas, efforts, work, etc, to date on their assignment in groups of common OB concept choice.

To engage students in identifying and explaining the key OB concepts they will use in their examination

To engage students in applying the selected concepts to identify and justify ways of improving their organisations

To practice writing sentences/paragraphs that justify, in the full academic sense of explain, illustrate, support and justify, the recommendations made claims made
OB concepts = the theoretical concepts chosen from the Study Guide modules 4-6 as the focus for their examination of how these concepts could be applied in a familiar organisational setting to improve its productivity and work qualities. A minimum of two must be selected.
The session is divided into three parts – as follows

Topic: Organisational Behaviour
Select
two aspects of organisational behaviour from the range of concepts and theories considered in Modules 4-6 in the second half of the course (eg, organisational culture, structure, change and development; leadership; conflict/stress management, etc).
On the bases of these two aspects of organisational behaviour, critically analyse and evaluate an organization in which you are an active member. Ensure the criteria by which the evaluation is made are clearly explained.
From this evaluation, justify a set of recommendations aimed at improving the performance and quality of the organisation in relation to the aspects of organisational behaviour selected.
NB - In order to best relate your work in this assignment to real life experiences, choose an organisation that you are currently a member of and are active within. Use your experiences to illustrate the behaviours you are describing and the points you are making
NB - It is important to do more than describe the organisation and the aspects of organisational behaviour you have chosen. Rather, you are expected to argue a case for the relevance and effectiveness of the recommendations you are making with respect to the chosen aspects of organisational behaviour.
Check the assessment criteria sheet and note the different weightings for the different aspects of the task.
Part 2: – Sharing observations and ideas
In small groups -
2.1. Using the prescribed text and in consultation with the people in your small class group, complete ‘The Concepts Table’ below in relation to the two sets of OB concepts you have selected as the focus of your analysis in the assignment.
Complete the table as quickly as possible. Be brief and concise with your written responses and try to complete the whole of the table before moving to the second activity.
Completing the table
The table is designed to systematise your current understanding of your chosen organisation by focussing this understanding in relation to some of the OB concepts appropriate to the assignment. By placing them side by side in this table, you can begin to appreciate the relationship that holds between these concepts as they are enacted in your organisation.
Row 1 Name the Organisation or the specific part of it that you will be examining. (choose an organisation you have personal experience of through work or other forms of participation and don’t choose a part of the organisation that could be considered small enough to constitute a group – remember the focus in the second half of the course is on organisational issues) Eg, School of Education and Professional Studies.
Row 2 Name the two concepts chosen Eg, OB1 Organisational structure, OB2 organisational culture
Row 3 State the reference source of these concepts – chapter in text book etc. Eg, Robbins et al 2008 Ch 16 and Ch 17
Row 4-8 A. Note down a few (up to 4) of the useful tools or ideas your chosen concept enables you to deploy in your examination. State them and what they are used for. Eg, OB1 – 6 elements model (used for dividing structure into 6 aspects that can be considered separately), structural design models and types (used for defining different types of structures, etc). OB2 – definitions (used to identify different ways of describing culture), cultural types (used to identify and describe different types of culture), cultural functions (used to identify the different purposes and outcomes that come from different cultures), evaluating culture (used to identify criteria of and make value judgments about the worth of culture)
Row 9-13 B. Note down some of the understandings of your chosen organisation that you have already formed in relation to the application of these tools or ideas. Eg, OB1 – School EPS = bureaucracy, strong chain of command, etc. OB2 – School EPS = dominant institutional culture, strong performance orientation, etc.

Part 3: Presenting your claims in writing.
To engage students in using their responses to the previous activities as the basis of writing sentences or paragraphs for use in their assignment essays.
3.1. For each of your findings listed in the concepts table B a). – d).
Write a small paragraph that –
(i) Suggests a recommendation that will overcome or support this finding
(ii) Explains how it will do this
(iii) Support this recommendation with appropriate literature

What aspects of each paragraph require further explanation or development?
Where could such paragraphs appear in an essay?
In what ways do they address the assessment criteria?
