Select a topic from the list below.
Carry out research to find out some important dates and historic moments associated with the topic you have chosen. You will develop a 1000 word annotated bibliography (200 words per journal article) and write a 2000 word research report describing how that key development influenced/influences the modern visitor economy.
The annotated bibliography will consist of five 200-word annotations of the five references that you source for your final report.
You will use the annotated bibliography to assist you to write your final research report.
 
Below is a list of ten key developments that have had a major impact in the development of the visitor economy.

1. The earliest hotels – food and lodging for travelers and their livestock
2. The introduction of coffee in the 17th century – French and British Coffee Houses and the wide impact of their wider social development role
3. The Industrial revolution in late 18th and early 19th centuries and the advent of rail travel  - meant people could work away from home
4. The development of hotel ‘Franchise Chains’ with the Hotel Ritz in Paris and the Ritz-Carlton in the USA - their social contribution and impact on the workforce
5. The advent of air travel and the development of luxury sea travel
6. Economic development after World War II producing an increased market of business travelers and tourists
7. Holidays for all!- The growth of tourism and hospitality as commercial industries in their own right in the late 20th century
8. The global technological advancement of the 20th and 21st centuries
9. The advent of major and mega events in the 20th century
10. The Global financial situation in the early 21st century

 
 
 
What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
The process
Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research.
First, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.
Cite the book, article, or document using the appropriate style.
Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.
