Essay Assignment Guidelines for Students
EDUC 119 Semester One 2016

Essay Assignment (as described in Course Booklet)
 
Briefly describe two significant experiences in your development as learner-experiences that you think were somehow critical to your cognitive, personal, social, moral, or language development.
 
Analyse both experiences using two theories of human development (including key concepts) covered in this course.
 
For this assignment, you are asked to address these two questions concerning child development. More specifically, you are asked to write a 1,200-word essay that focuses on a single type of development (cognitive, social, emotional or moral) and address each question in relation to that specific type of development. You are encouraged to illustrate your essay with authentic examples from your own experiences. Your tutor will explain the requirements fully.
 
First draft essay guidelines
An outline of your essay is to be submitted on CANVAS
To be eligible for your 5% you must submit the following draft work before 12.30pm 9^th April.

• Some bullet points about your first selected theory
• Some bullet points about your second selected theory
• A 4-5 sentence paragraph that attempts to make links between one of your chosen theories and one of your chosen experiences

Essay Assignment (enriched description)
 
The final essay – the one you will submit in CANVAS 7^th May – should include the following five elements:
A Title Page
 
The first page of your essay should be a title page. It should contain the title of your essay, your name and the date.
Introduction
 
Your essay should begin with a paragraph (sometimes two) that introduces your essay to your reader. This introduction should inform your reader of the general topic of the essay and the specific area of development that youwill focus on. For example, if you have chosencognitive development, you will want to explicitly state in your introduction that you will be discussing 1) how children grow cognitively, 2) what factors influence their cognitive development, and 3) how can teachers create learning environments that stimulate cognitive growth. NOTE: If you choose a type of development that has more than one prominent theory/theorist associated with it, then you will want to make clear in your introduction which theory/theorist you will be focusing on.
 
The “Body” of Essay
 
This is the part of your essay where you answer and develop fully the ideas/theses/questions foreshadowed in your introduction.  In this case it is useful to first focus on the question: How do children develop over time? Second, what educational implications does this have on your future practice?Thus, the body of your essay can be built on these two questions. Addressing each question fully will likely require four to sixparagraphs. I describe below in more detail how you might go about addressing each question.
 
How children develop over time?
Chose one theory of development to focus on first. Whatever type of development you have chosen, you will want tobegin byofferingyour reader a clear definition of thattype of development. For example, if you’ve chosen to write about cognitive development, you will want to begin by describing cognitivedevelopment: What is cognitive development? Who is one main theorist associated with the type of development you’ve chosen, then you will want to identify him/her and likely use his/her conception of development in your essay. Describe the key concepts of their theory.
 
Next, describe one significant experience in your development as a learner that illustrates the key concepts of the theory you have chosen above. Your essay should include a concrete and vivid example of what these key concepts look like in practice. The example may be drawn from many sources, such as: your own experience as a learner (describing what a great teacher from your past did to stimulate your growth), the experience of your children or sibling as learners, that you were indirectly involved.
 
Give a clear definition of the second theory you have chosen and describe the key concepts of the theory as above. Again illustrate from describing one significant experience in your own development as a learner.

What educational implications does this have on your future practice?
This is the theory to practice component of your essay – where you draw out and discuss the educational implications of the theory of development you’ve just described.I suggest including two or three key implications, with each implication being drawn directly from a key principle or theoretical concept introduced earlier in your essay. For example, if you’ve chosen to focus your essay on psychosocial development, you’d want to discuss how you, as a teacher (or teachers more generally), might create a learning environment that fosters children’spsychosocial growth. If you’ve identified Erikson’s theory as your primary perspective on psychosocial development, then you will want your description connected to a specific stage of this theory. This is important because each stage is characterised by a different “developmental crisis” and thus the educational implications would have to be relevant to the specific crisis of a given stage of development. Of course, this is true of all stage theories, not just Erikson’s—if you’re talking about the educational implications of Piaget’s theory, you’d have to begin by identifying the developmental stage of the children and then proceed from there (knowing the “emerging capacities” and “limitations” associated with that stage).
 
A Conclusion
 
Your conclusion should directly link to the introduction, summarising the main purposes of your essay. Where your introduction might have included a statement like “This essay will discuss…” your conclusion would include a statement like “This essay discussed…” Your conclusion should not only review the main purposes of the essay, but it should also offer a clear and concise summary of the main ideas, points and/or suggestions made in the body of it. Finally, your conclusion should conclude with a summary sentence or two that captures the essence of your essay and brings it to a (poetic!) close.
 
References
 
At the end of your essay, you should have a final section titled References. In this case, your primary reference is likely to be your textbook, but you might also have one or more additional sources (other books, articles, Web sites, lectures, etc.). Additional references beyond your textbook are not required but they are encouraged. Below are examples of how to reference different types of sources in APA-6^th edition manuscript style.

Final Suggestions
Once you have completed a first draft of your essay, you should review it yourself very carefully and then, if at all possible, have someone else review it as well. This review and revision process will allow you (and others) to critique the essay and identify any missing, inaccurate or irrelevant information that needs to be edited. It also allows you the chance to correct any typos, misspelled words, and grammatical errors. These types of mistakes in “basic mechanics” are especially difficult for writers to see in their own writing. Thus, it is especially important to have someone else “proofread” your essay for such problems. Towards this end, we will be using some of the tutorial meetings during the week of 11 April for a peer review session.
