    development have been affected by globalization. We will also look at the various
    types of firms that are involved in International Business.

    Tutorial Preparation: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
    publishes an annual report titled “World Investment Report” that details the trends in
    trade and investment over the past year.
    Using the tables from the report (in particular, Annex, search for the information
    about foreign direct investment (FDI) trends, and the nationalities of some of the

    Semi-globalization: bilateral and regional trading agreements
    Overview: Integration of regional economies like the European Union (EU) and
    North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have raised concerns about
    business being truly global.
    In this seminar, we will consider some of the advantages and disadvantages of
    regional blocs and free trade agreements for business operating within and outside
    these regional economies.

    Select a country that you are interested in and find the number of active regional and
    bilateral agreements that the country has.

    National Competitive Advantage and the Internationalization process of firms
    Overview: In this lecture, we will discuss how countries develop a national
    competitive advantage (using Porter’s theory), and how this is associated with the
    country of origin issue.
    We will also cover issues related to the internationalization process of the firm.
    Readings: Read Chapter 6 of textbook, and the following article (search for, and
    access through the UTS library’s electronic catalogue):

    model revisited: From liability of foreignness to liability of outsidership," Journal of

    Overview: In order to assess the opportunities in a foreign market, it is important to
    select the appropriate variables and data for analysis. In this lecture, we will focus on
    collecting quality data from various sources.
    The lectures in Week 4 and 5 will help you prepare for Assessment task 3.

    Ethics in International Business
    Readings: Read Chapter 5 of textbook
    Overview: Using various ethical perspectives and philosophies, we will discuss
    issues MNEs can face when operating outside their home country. These issues
    include corruption/bribery, environmental protection, and working conditions.
    Tutorial Preparation (complete for learning portfolio): Nike has been long-
    accused of using child labor for production. Since Nike does not own any production
    factory (it outsources production), it relies on the factory owners to ensure that no
    child labor is used in production.

    eliminate child labor related issues in production. Research news media and journals

    Human Resource Issues in International Business
    Readings: Read Chapter 19 of textbook
    Overview: MNEs face a number of challenges managing human resources across
    boundaries. These include labour policies, staffing overseas operations, and
    managing expatriates.
    Using specific examples, we will discuss how MNEs attempt to respond to these
    challenges.

    Emerging Issues in International Business
    Overview: In this seminar, we will discuss emerging issues in International
    Business, and the future challenges and opportunities that firms may face when
    operating internationally.
    Tutorial Preparation (complete for learning portfolio):
    Visit www.geerthofstede.com and collect the scores for the 6 cultural dimensions for
    Australia and Thailand.
    1. Compare the scores of the two countries and summarize the key differences
    and similarities between the cultures. Using these differences and similarities,
    describe what issues might an Australian expatriate manager face if leading a
    team of Thai nationals in Thailand.
    2. What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of Hofstede’s study and
    classification of countries? To answer this question, you must research and
    use relevant research articles.
