    Project 1
    PROJECT
This project is aimed at getting you to better understand and interpret structures in the built-environment. This
project will require you to consider the following small structure
 Mudgee Tower ‘Permanent Camping’, New South Wales, Australia
(Architecture: Casey Brown Architecture, Engineering: Murtagh Bond)
    PROJECT TASKS
The project tasks are as follows:
    1. Annotate diagrams of the structure to identify all permanent (dead) loads and all anticipated types of
    live loads. [2 marks]
    2. Describe the principal structural system (i.e. load-bearing form) adopted for the structure. Discuss why
this system may have been chosen and the individual members that form this system. [4 marks]
    3. Describe the site/location factors that would influence the assessment of wind forces on the structure.
    [3 marks]
    4. Annotate diagrams of the structure to demonstrate the stability/bracing system (for both orthogonal
    directions). [3 marks]
    5. Discuss material issues that would need to managed to ensure longevity of the structure. [2 marks]
    6. Choose a structural member that is subject to bending action – indicate locations of maximum
compression and tension given the shape of the member. Also indicate how lateral torsional buckling is
controlled for the member. [3 marks]
    7. Examine a critical connection detail, describing the complete force transfer through the joint. Adopt the
use of a ‘free-body’ diagram to present the response. [4 marks]
    8. Sketch the type of footing system that would most likely have been adopted to support the structure at
    ground level. [2 marks]
    9. Comment on any serviceability (e.g. deflection) criteria that would need to be satisfied for the structure.
    [2 marks]
There is a limit of 700 words.
Concise ‘dot-point’ style responses to the project tasks must be adopted.
The use of photos, sketches and diagrams must also be used as a means of responding to the project tasks.
    DELIVERABLES and DEADLINES
Due Date – Tuesday 11th October at 4pm
This project is an individual submission
Method of delivery – A4 hardcopy to the Sustainable Development Building
Please note that you will need to submit the assignment with a copy of the Faculty assignment cover sheet.
    ASSESSMENT
This project is weighted at 25% of the overall course mark.
