Annotated Bibliography – Journal Articles Research Report
    Updated February 2016
These assessment tasks are related. They aim to encourage you to engage with current or
recent research presented in Communication & Media Studies journals (see ‘Presentation’
below for a Library Guide on Communications & Media that identifies relevant journals).
The first part – an annotated bibliography – asks you to summarise 10 journal articles. The
second part – a report – asks you to give a detailed description of 5 journal articles. Your
chosen articles may overlap (ie you can use the same articles in part 2 as you have
summarised in Part 1), however you must not copy from the first task to complete aspects of
second. The report must present new material.
    Criteria for marking :
    •  A critical and practical understanding of task and topic
    •  Appropriate number and choice of sources
    •  Clear summary of selected sources
    •  Critical evaluation of selected sources
    •  Finished copy of high editorial standard
    •  Consistency and accuracy in bibliographic style
Assessment Task 1: Annotated Bibliography 15% Word limit: 2000
Deadline: Week 3 Thursday March 24, 4pm (submit as paper copy).
    Details of task:
Prepare an annotated bibliography on a topic of your choice related to communication and
media studies, consisting of ten (10) entries. A list of possible topics is also included below
(p2). An annotated bibliography includes a reference (using the Harvard style) and a short
    summary for each article.
This exercise will assist you to identify, summarise and evaluate relevant academic sources. It
requires you to summarise and evaluate arguments and concepts in academic texts. You may
want to review the essay questions in Assessment Task 3 and use them as a guide for topics.
You will have 10 entries of academic sources identified from your own research using
Monash Library databases. Annotations for each entry should be 200 words maximum (not
including the reference). Examples of annotated bibliographies will be provided.
    Requirements:
You must use Communication and Media journals as your sources. You are to focus on
academic sources, ie articles that have been peer-reviewed and published in an edited
scholarly journal. If you are unsure about what journals are appropriate, use the lists provided
in the Library Guide for Communications and Media (note: while these lists include some
‘trade’ journals as well as academic journals; you should only use academic journals).
Presentation - format is important, please follow these instructions:
    • First, provide the reference for the article you will summarise. (Note: the reference is not
included in the word limit). Consistent and accurate use of referencing conventions is
important. As noted above, the Harvard referencing style is the required style for this unit.
    (see Library guidelines – http://guides.lib.monash.edu/citing-referencing/harvard).
    • Next, add your annotation (ie a summary of the article) below the reference. Each
annotation will be between 150-200 words in length.
    • Check your formatting, which needs to be: 1.5 line spacing, 12pt font, 2cm margins.
    • Do not leave references/heading hanging at the bottom of the page. Keep the reference and
    annotation text together

texts in the field? Do they develop a counter argument to other researchers identified in the
    article.
